The so-called “Oscars of Fashion” took place in New York on Monday night against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum of Natural History, and what a night it turned out to be. Sponsored by Amazon Fashion for the fourth year on the trot, the annual CFDA Awards is an event that truly celebrates the stars of the industry, with an array of prizes handed out to designers, journalists, and icons alike.

The enduring influence of Ralph Lauren was recognised as he took home the accolade for American Womenswear Designer of the Year, whilst Thom Browne was named American Menswear Designer of the Year. In the accessories category, it was actor-turned-designer twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who were chosen as American Accessory Designers of The Year, and deservedly so, as The Row continues to define the quiet luxury movement currently shaping the market.
Whilst the headlining awards were dominated by legacy, other categories celebrated modernity. Ashlyn Park, of her eponymous tailoring brand Ashlyn, received American Emerging Designer of the Year, whilst the Innovation Award was presented to Jerry Lorenzo of Fear of God. To round out the prizes, Sara Moonves of W Magazine received the Media Award, The Founders Award was handed to Cynthia Rowley and the International Award honoured Pieter Mulier of Alaïa.
Elsewhere, the red carpet was serving a blend of class and charisma, hardly surprising given that everyone who is anyone in the industry were present at what is dubbed as one of fashion’s biggest nights out. A real standout look of the evening was that of supermodel Amber Valletta, who presented Donatella Versace with the Positive Change Award. To commemorate the moment, Valletta revived the low-plunging sheer green gown she wore on the 1999 runway – which was immortalised by Jennifer Lopez at the Grammys the following year. Another highly-papped celebrity was A$AP Rocky, decked out in full Chanel to receive the Fashion Icon Award and joined by partner Rihanna, who was also given the same honour back in 2014, wearing a sleek tailored look by Alaïa.

The world may see France and Italy, home to arguably the most esteemed houses, as the epicentre of the fashion industry, but across the pond lays a dominant force. American fashion is fun, fresh, and exciting, and the CFDA Awards highlighted just that.
