We were pleased to catch up with Hertfordshire-born Tom Did It, a producer and rap artist. Tom told us all about his upcoming festival performances and exciting collaborations. Read on to find out more.
How did you come up with the stage name ‘Tom Did It’?
I used to be a producer and it was the most uninventive producer name ever. I paid a girl on Fiver to do a Tom Did It tag for my tracks but I recently did a feature with Chip and he re -did my tag and I was so gassed.
In addition to being a writer and rapper, you are also a producer. Can you tell us about some of the artists you have worked with/would like to work with?
Any production I’ve done so far has been with mates from college. As soon as I established myself as a producer I went straight into being an artist. I like making rap beats so in the future I would love to work with Nines, Blade Brown, Skrapz, Potter Payper.
You have a unique sound as you fuse Indie pop with rap- was this a conscious choice or did you naturally fall in love with the two genres and blended them?
Because my voice is raspy the way I sing fits in indie pop well so I just fell into indie but I love rap and hip hop so it all came together like that.
You filmed the video for Stupid Love on your family’s farm. How has growing up in the countryside influenced you as an artist?
My main influence is that I had no influence. There’s no one in my area that does music. I looked up to celebs but I had no one to look up to in my area until I discovered Nafe Smallz.
Many people struggle to express their emotions and your music is so open and honest. Can you describe your creative process when writing a song?
99% of the time I’m sat in a dark room by myself. I prefer before on my own instead of in front of a bunch of people. When I’m on my own I find it easier to dig deep. That’s the only place I can get the best out of my emotions.
Will you be doing any live performances over the next year?
I performed at Nafe Smallz show at the Outernet in London, he brought me out to perform L.O.V.E with him from his album. I feature on the song. I had a show at in Oceanfest festival in Devon in June. I will also be performing at All Points East and Stratford festival in August.
