Ghetts – On Purpose, With Purpose
by Rue Blenkinsop
Release date: 23rd February, 2024
Ghetts’ clear vision is brought to his audience on every track on this album. Tumbi takes you to the sea, before having watched the crashing waves humble him – it makes for a perfect music video and the self- referential, old school, smooth percussive groove gets you dancing. It’s most definitely a summer bop. It’s a gorgeous contrast to Laps (feat. Moonchild Sanelly) which will be added to the gym playlist, how could it not, when it starts with “Run up the steps like Rocky Balboa?” Moonchild Sanelly epitomises modern rap.
With Ghetts delivering lyrical speed throughout, Twin Sisters (feat. Skrapz) is definitely a fantasy piece. However, the star track goes to Double Standards (feat. Sampha) which is an immaculate collaboration. You will feel, think, escape and then feel trapped by the world in which we live. Jazzy melodies will relax you into a meditative state and remind you, it’s lonely but you’re not alone.
Ghetts makes people feel seen and is a voice for the voiceless.
When it comes to Double Standards the poetry is certainly relevant and political, the music harmonious and beautiful. Sampha is undoubtedly one of the greatest voices of our time and Ghetts a multi -talented pioneer. It’s short, (each bit purposely selected) and is the coming together of many great artists: Kano, Shakka and Dexter Daps amongst others.
